Behavioral Therapy in Murray, Utah
Behavioral therapy is a cognitive-behavioral approach that focuses on the psychosocial aspects of treatment. The goal of this type of therapy is to change negative thinking patterns and destructive behavior. Behavioral therapy can help people who are diagnosed with depression, anxiety, panic disorders and anger issues. It can also treat conditions like PTSD, ADHD, phobias, OCD, self-harm and substance abuse. At the Family Counseling Center, we specialize in behavioral therapy treatments.
Types of Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy: This combines behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy. Treatment is focused on how someone’s thoughts and beliefs influence actions and moods. It also focuses on a person’s current problems and how to fix them. The long-term goal is to change someone’s thinking and behavioral patterns.
System desensitization: System desensitization relies on classical conditioning. It is often used to treat phobias, as people are taught to replace a fear response to a phobia with a relaxation response. The patient is taught relaxation and breathing techniques. After this is mastered, the therapist will slowly expose them to their fear in increasing doses as they practice these techniques.
Aversion therapy: Aversion therapy is often used to treat problems like substance abuse. It works by teaching people to associate a desirable, yet unhealthy, stimulus with something extremely unpleasant. This unpleasant stimulus may be something uncomfortable, which eventually causes the patient to longer desire alcohol or drugs.
Does Behavioral Therapy Work?
Behavioral therapy has been used to successfully treat a number of conditions. It is considered to be highly effective. A study for the National Institutes of Health found that behavioral therapy is most effective for treating anxiety disorders, general stress, anger control problems, depression, substance abuse and certain eating disorders.
