Adolescent Mental Disorders

As a parent, it can be tough to figure it out whether your adolescent child’s troubling behavior is just part of growing up or a problem that needs professional help. Mental health is just as important to a child’s overall health as it is to an adult’s. For a young person showing symptoms of a mental disorder, it’s vital to start treatment as early as possible. If you notice signs and symptoms that last for weeks or months and get in the way of your child’s daily life, it’s time to contact a professional.

You may need to seek professional help if your child:

  • Feels excessively anxious or worried
  • Has frequent tantrums or is severely irritated
  • Experiences frequent stomachaches or headaches with no explanation
  • Is constantly in motion and can’t sit still
  • Has difficulty sleeping and/or frequent nightmares
  • Loses interest in activities and hobbies
  • Avoids time with friends
  • Has trouble in school
  • Fears gaining weight; exercises and diets obsessively
  • Has low energy or no energy at all
  • Has spells of intense activity
  • Harms herself/himself
  • Engages in dangerous, destructive behavior
  • Harms other people
  • Uses drugs, smokes or drinks
  • Has suicidal thoughts
  • Thinks his or her mind is out of control
  • Hears voices
